Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) is looking for a Field Operator to join our BioWorks team. BioWorks is a field based team within GWRC Biosecurity Department. The main focus is on the delivery of Regional Possum Predator Control Programme aimed at maintaining the benefits of low possum numbers in areas that were under long term bovine Tb vector control and have since been declared Tb free. We also undertake significant amount of possum and mustelid control through a range of City Reserve areas.

The Field Operator is required to carry out a variety of duties to reduce possum and mustelid populations to required standards.

This is a permanent, full-time role, based in Masterton.

The Field Operator reports to a Field Supervisor and will have:

  • Daily contact with other Bioworks staff.
  • Regular contact within the operational areas with residents and the general public on most aspects of service delivery.

To succeed in this role you will need

  • Willing to obtain knowledge and experience in pest animal control (possum or mustelid), if it is not already held.
  • To be capable of using your own initiative and to work with minimal or no supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with confidence to engage with people to inform them about the current planned pest control activities while projecting an image of confidence and efficiency.
  • Be prepared to undertake industry training to obtain the Primary ITO Pest Animal Operations qualification (level 3), if it is not already held.
  • Meet the “Fit & Proper Person” criteria to be able to obtain a Controlled Substance License for 1080, potassium & sodium cyanide or any other controlled substance required. Alternatively hold a relevant controlled substance license.
  • Good reading and writing skills and ability with the use of Microsoft Office.
  • A full car licence.
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle off road and a motorcycle license would be of benefit but not vital.
  • Competency with off-road 4WD vehicles would be beneficial.
  • To have an affinity with the outdoors and be physically fit and self-motivated to carry out the functions of the position.
  • An ability to navigate through bush environments and traverse uneven terrain.
  • To demonstrate flexibility and desire to support the BioWorks unit to achieve their requirements.

From time to time you may be required to stay away overnight as part of your duties.
