A unique opportunity for a full time horticulturalist.

In the northeast corner of New Zealand’s north island lies one of the most spectacular and picturesque pockets in the world. Helena Bay Lodge has the unique opportunity for a full time member of staff to join our gardening department in maintaining and developing this luxury lodge.

You’ll need to enjoy a practical, outdoors lifestyle, be able to approach situations creatively and have an eye for detail to ensure the gardens and greater estate offer enjoyment and interest all year round. You will be joining an existing team of other qualified and enthusiastic horticulturalists to help Helena Bay Lodge’s grounds meet their world class potential. Invasive weed control and predator management is an important aspect of the job.

Essential qualities to be successful in this role:

  • Have own reliable transport due to location
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in the horticultural industry.
  • Qualified to a minimum Level 3 Horticultural standard.
  • A level of competence with modern chemicals and their application techniques.
  • An enthusiastic and self-motivated person, driven to achieve perfection.
  • A keen eye for presentation and detail.
  • Applicants for this position should have NZ residency, NZ working rights, or a valid NZ work visa.

Preferred but not essential qualities include:

  • A working knowledge of machinery/workshop tools.
  • An understanding of invasive weed control and predator control
  • A good level of competence with modern irrigation systems.
  • Experience in landscape gardening and the development of planting plans.
  • Grow safe and Certified chemical handling.
  • Wheels, Tracks and Rollers certificate along with Heavy transport license.
  • Experience maintaining formal gardens.
  • Experience growing and propagating plants from cuttings.

A competitive salary is on offer; with the working week set at Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm. This role will also include occasional rostered weekend work. The successful candidate will work closely with the new Head Gardener and colleagues to continue forward momentum and improvement of the grounds at this resort; ensuring we meet the very highest standard expected. The successful candidate will be entitled to 4 weeks’ holiday per annum and statutory public holidays.
