The West Coast Wildlife Centre is the official home to the incubation and captive rearing program for New Zealand’s most endangered kiwi – the Rowi and Haast tokoeka.  The Centre not only provides specialist husbandry care to help save kiwi from extinction, but also offers visitors an educational experience looking at the fight for kiwi survival, a chance to see Rowi in a natural forest walk-through setting, together with a guided tour through the incubation and rearing facility.  The Centre is a public private partnership with the Department of Conservation, working closely with Franz Josef Waiau Office and Haast Awarua Field Centre.

Position:  Wildlife Husbandry Manager

Contract: Full time

Employment commencement: ASAP if possible

Location:  West Coast Wildlife Centre, Franz Josef Glacier.

Work Roster:  Up to 45 hours per week including weekends and public holidays.

The Kiwi Husbandry Manager will be responsible for managing the daily kiwi husbandry and Operation Nest Egg ProgramTM for Rowi and Haast tokoeka kiwi. You will lead a small Kiwi husbandry team, as well as be part of the greater, close-knit team of the West Coast Wildlife Centre. You will also be in charge of Tuatara Husbandry (eight Tuatara on-site) and you will also be responsible for guiding visitors through our kiwi and tuatara facility so you must be confident speaking to groups of people, as well as have excellent knowledge of conservation issues affecting New Zealand fauna. Previous experience in avian captive husbandry is essential along with basic avian first aid skills as well as reptile knowledge. It will be beneficial to have experience in tour guiding or presenting conservation messages to small groups of people. Experience of artificial incubation and egg candling is required. It is essential to have a full drivers licence and having your own vehicle is preferred.  The ideal person will be flexible, passionate, committed and expected to work in other aspects of the centre where customer service is a high priority.  It is essential to be reliable and have the ability to work individually, be able to manage others and be able to contribute in a team environment. The successful applicant will be comfortable living in a small, isolated community.
