The 11th INTECOL International Wetlands Conference is coming to Ōtautahi in October 2021.
The conference will be run as a hybrid event where you can attend in-person or virtually for those who cannot travel due to current Covid restrictions.
The four-day conference programme will explore the re-creation and/or restoration of wetlands in Canterbury, and some of the world’s most spectacular natural landscapes are part of what makes a visit to Canterbury and the rest of South Island so memorable. Participants at the conference will be able to discover and explore a modern city that has evolved around a wetland environment in the field trips available. The conference is not limited to urban spaces, as field trips will also explore the wetlands in agricultural landscapes in the Canterbury region.
The conferences aim is to increase awareness and appreciation of the importance of wetlands for sustaining New Zealand landscapes and their people, along with promoting traditional ecological knowledge, including Mātauranga Māori as an essential component of wetland restoration and management. This will help the integration of traditional knowledge in western science and highlight further the importance of the world wetlands for local populations.
