  • Balance between field and office work in this year long, fixed-term role

About us

As a great harbour capital city, Wellington City Council has established a vision for Wellington as ‘an inclusive, sustainable and creative capital for people to live, work and play’. The future of Wellington is compact, inclusive & connected, greener, resilient, vibrant and prosperous.

Wellington is a city teeming with biodiversity, be a part of a team leading cutting edge urban ecology initiatives. The Council’s Urban ecology team, part of Parks, Sport and Recreation, is responsible for protecting, restoring, and connecting people with Wellington’s natural spaces.

About the role

This role is an opportunity to join a specialist team where you will enable community conservation action, provide expert advice, deliver on biodiversity outcomes for Wellington city and create safe spaces in Wellington for native biodiversity to thrive. You will do this by providing technical and operational support to partners, communities, contractors, and other stakeholders. This role provides a mix of field work, community support, and contractor management. You’ll collaborate in cross council and interagency delivery of work programs, provide infrastructure and build capability across our amazing community pest animal control groups and support Urban Ecology in data sharing and decision making. You will be exposed to the team’s work across other programmes such as restoration, pest plant control and fresh water. This role will be a great career step for someone wanting to move from on the ground animal pest control to coordinating the efforts of others.

About you

You are passionate about biodiversity in the city and have experience in animal pest control tools and methods, as well as being able to link science and technology with on the ground application. You’re able to prioritise and take a pragmatic approach to problem solving, as well as have clear communication and strong interpersonal skills. You will ideally have previous experience working with community groups and you’re happy to be able to enable others in the community to act for the environment. You will be managing resources to supply trapping efforts across the city so ability or experience managing logistics would be an advantage. In a large landscape, visualizing data is key for decision making and planning so familiarity with GIS software would be advantageous but isn’t essential.

Ideally, we’d like someone full-time (40 hours per week) in this role, but we are open to someone working 32 hours as well.

In return, you’ll work for an organisation that really values its people. We provide a broad range of training and career and professional development opportunities, with the potential to gain relevant qualifications. We have a great team culture and emphasise the welfare of our people and places.

If this sounds like you, apply online now with your cover letter and CV.
