Conservation and ecological restoration field team member (Plant and Animal Pest Control) (x2) – Good Wood Aotearoa – Auckland & Waiheke Island

Join a growing team working across Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf islands carrying out meaningful pest plant and animal control projects to help restore and sustain the region’s most significant ecological areas.

We are currently looking for someone who is interested in conservation in Aotearoa, is enthusiastic and willing to learn new skills whilst integrating into our fun loving team.

Our work is exclusively off track and involves using herbicide and animal pest control tools. A good level of fitness is beneficial.

We currently have two positions to fill within our teams. One working across Auckland at Te Henga (Bethells Beach), Shakespear Regional Park and Tawharanui Regional Park. The other is on Waiheke Island carrying out restoration (planting) site preparation work and animal and pest plant control.

During the summer months we spend most of our time controlling pest plants across Auckland and Waiheke regional parks and over winter we mainly contribute to large scale restoration (planting) projects on Waiheke Island.

Accommodation and food is generally provided if our teams are working away from home.

Essential skills you will bring:

  • Have a full and clean drivers licence
  • Physically fit and able
  • Genuinely enjoy working outdoors
  • Be committed, reliable and keen
  • Be able to work away from home week to week in supplied accommodation; staying in basic shared huts, barns, beach houses, lodges, Council houses and sheds
  • Be comfortable working with herbicides and other pesticides
  • Be able to work flexible length days
  • Be a team player, including contributing to cooking and cleaning when in the supplied shared accommodation.

Transferable industry skills you will learn/ gain from the job:

  • Gain experience in an environmental/conservation field
  • Become good at native plant and weed identification
  • Become proficient at using animal trapping tools
  • Navigation and GPS skills
  • Strength and fitness to be able to carry equipment like heavy backpacks through rough terrain with ease
  • Data collection skills
  • Understand applicable conservation methodologies used across jobs
  • Working around and handling 4×4 (Ute), LUV (Side by side), ATV (Quad bike).

We are looking to employ the right persons either on a fixed term contract at the current Living wage until 30 June 2026 with the high likelihood to extend, or on an on going casual contract at $28.95/hour + 8% Holiday Pay = $31.27/hour. 

A minimum of 30 hours/week can be expected, however on average, the team will work 40 hours/week.
