Website Volunteer Service Abroad
A hundred endangered doves were illegally captured from the wild and kept in small, cramped conditions. A local team led by international experts and conservationists stepped in to help save these unique birds. Collectively, they worked to relocate the doves and provide a long term, sustainable approach to release them back into their natural habitat. They have also developed alternative breeding programmes to ensure their long term survival.
To support the conservation of the dove and other endangered species, The Tetere Species Recovery Centre has been built (fully funded by Toldeo Zoo). This centre forms part of a broader multi-stakeholder initiative to save species from extinction due to environmental threats to the ecosystem, such as volcanic activity and the arrival of invasive species such as black rats.
Local staff at the Recovery Centre, are a dedicated and enthusiastic group, but lack some of the skills to effectively manage the conservation programmes.
