As an Insight Advisor, you will deliver high-quality raraunga (data) analysis and mātauranga (insights) to support conservation decision-making across the Biodiversity, Heritage and Visitors directorate. You will support the delivery of insight products aligned with Te Papa Atawhai, DOC’s strategic goals, collaborate across teams to ensure insights meet organisational needs, and help transform complex data into clear, actionable advice.
The position will be focused on:
• Developing and maintaining insight work programmes that support DOC’s conservation objectives
- Using data analysis, scenario modelling, and visualisation to generate meaningful insights
- Collaborating across internal teams and with external partners to support evidence-based decision making
Analysing data from multiple sources to identify trends, challenges and opportunities for conservation. - Connecting with other teams to understand their needs and ensure insights inform strategic planning.
- Working closely with the Insights and Analytics team to develop and deliver insight-driven reports and recommendations.
- Communicating findings effectively to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring insights are accessible and actionable.
- Supporting the development of tools and dashboards to enhance data visualisation and reporting.
- Keeping up to date with the latest trends in data analytics, conservation science and decision-support methods.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
You will have strong conceptual and analytical skills with the ability to create meaning from both qualitative and quantitative data. Experience working in conservation, recreation, or tourism sectors and knowledge of relevant government legislation will help you succeed in this role.
If you have the following, we are keen to hear from you:
- Tertiary qualification with a research methods component or equivalent experience
- Advanced conceptual and analytical skills
- Strong ability to interpret data to draw out key findings and insights to help tell the story of what the data mean and identify next steps
- Experience in data visualisation and reporting tools. Some design skills would be an advantage
- Experience in developing infographic-like products from research/data
- Proficiency in relevant analytical tools e.g. Excel, power BI, GIS, R, or Python
- Excellent relationship management skills
- Strong communication skills for a range of audiences
Desirable:
- Knowledge of Te Ao Māori concepts and commitment to Treaty partnership principles
- Knowledge of conservation, environmental science or a related field
- Experience working within a government agency or public sector environment

The Insights and Analytics team leads the insights, analytics, and data science functions across the Department’s Biodiversity, Heritage and Visitors functions. We’re a team of insights advisors, technical advisors, and analysts who are passionate about conservation. Using information from across DOC and the environmental sector, we are responsible for strategically designing and delivering an insights product suite to meet our future needs and support operational decision-making and conservation prioritisation.
