Full-time, one-year fixed term parental leave
The EcoQuest Centre for Indigeneity, Ecology and Creativity (EcoQuest) is seeking a full-time lecturer for our Ecology in Action programmes based at our Centre in Whakatīwai/Kaiaua.
This position is one-year fixed-term parental leave, starting 11 August 2025 (some flexibility with starting date is possible).
We seek applicants with a background in environmental science to join our vibrant learning community. We are especially keen to hear from applicants with experience in environmental monitoring, terrestrial or coastal-marine ecology and restoration, human-environment interactions, and/or sustainability, who have a working knowledge of environmental policy.
Applications are invited from people who have either a PhD, or a relevant graduate degree and/or equivalent professional experience. The appointee will be an engaging, inspiring, and effective teacher/mentor of our undergraduate students from the USA.
Essential Aspects and Important Skills for this role
The ideal candidates:
- demonstrate a passion for enabling advanced undergraduate students through effective and innovative teaching
- have proven abilities in research, and in supervising student research.
- demonstrate excellence in ecological field work, survey techniques and data analysis
- have extensive experience in delivering field studies in ecology and /or other environmental studies at undergraduate or graduate level
- demonstrate a strong commitment to honouring EcoQuest’s obligations to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, be willing and able to work within Te Ao Māori, and be dedicated to growing relationships with iwi and community
- maintain effective, positive, and professional working relationships with students, colleagues, and external collaborators
- show excellent communication and people skills
- have a full driver licence and be willing to transport students on field trips.
Important qualities and experiences for applicants to bring to the role:
- a proven ability to operate in a dynamic interdisciplinary team with a focus on applied field studies
- a willingness to contribute to the strategic goals of EcoQuest, and be involved in the development of our sustainable learning community
- a willingness to engage in areas outside the applicant’s own fields of expertise
- proven organisational and time management skills
- willingness (and be able) to be away on extended field trips for up to two weeks.
