Te Hoiere Bat Recovery Project
Pelorus/Te Hoiere catchment, Marlborough

Salary range: $71,743 – $74,642 pa.
Full-time, Permanent position

  • Are you passionate about conservation and enjoy working in the field with like-minded individuals dedicated to protecting taonga species?
  • Do you possess exceptional predator control skills that come naturally to you?
  • Would you like to contribute to an exciting conservation project supporting native species such as pekapeka/long-tailed bat?

Forest & Bird, New Zealand’s leading independent conservation organisation, has been advocating for nature on land and at sea for 100 years. We coordinate community-based projects throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.

We are seeking a team player to join our friendly Te Hoiere Bat Recovery Project team. In this role, you will carry out predator control by servicing the existing trap network through several reserves, supporting volunteer trappers. You will also work with project partners and landowners to expand the network into other areas, helping to secure a future for the pekapeka in the Top of the South.

This is a permanent, full-time role (37.5 hours per week) with a flexible work policy.

The new team member we are looking for will have:

  • At least two years’ experience in operational/hands-on landscape-scale predator control in New Zealand, with proven experience in coordinating predator control programmes to deliver positive conservation outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of New Zealand mammalian pests, their behaviour, and effective control methods.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the safe use of a variety of predator control tools and toxins.
  • Previous experience working with trail cameras and managing photo archives.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of competency in New Zealand back country/field skills, e.g., high level of physical fitness, navigation (map/compass/GPS) skills, logistical and trip-planning skills.
  • Familiarity with GPS, GIS, and other mapping / spatial skills, data collection and management platforms, particularly Trap NZ.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently (the role requires a lot of solo work).
  • Valid Outdoor First Aid, Chainsaw and Growsafe certificates.
  • Own a reliable vehicle & a full, clean NZ Drivers Licence.

If you’ve got what it takes and want to make a difference, we would love to hear from you.
