We have an exciting fixed-term opportunity for a Parks Restoration Project Lead to assist Greater Wellington’s Parks Department to phase out grazing in our regional parks and progressively restore the land to its natural state. The Parks Restoration Project Lead will implement the restoration of the parks network in line with Greater Wellingtons climate objectives and its Toitū Te Whenua Parks Network Plan 2020-30.

The role location is flexible (Wellington, Upper Hutt and/or Kapiti) and is full-time for a fixed-term of three years.

About the role

The Parks Retirement and Restoration Programme, is to run over the next ten years in line with actions and objectives set out in the Greater Wellington Climate Emergency Response and the Toitū Te Whenua Parks Network Plan 2020-30.

Greater Wellington is currently preparing a plan to design the phase out of grazing and progressively restore indigenous ecosystems across the Greater Wellington parks network. Greater Wellington requires the services of a Project Lead to implement the Plan and operationalise its delivery to achieve the desired outcomes.

This will be a substantial piece of work and a fundamental step toward achieving Greater Wellington’s (GW) organisational carbon neutrality targets and delivery of corporate climate objectives.

You will be joining the Parks department, where we are focussed on providing accessible opportunities for people to experience the outdoors and achieving good outcomes for regional biodiversity. We collaborate with teams from across the organisation as well as mana whenua partners, other agencies and the wider community, to manage the Regional Park network.

Skills and experience required

The ideal candidate will be skilled in project management, community and stakeholder engagement, effectively communicating and collaborating with a wide range of people. They will bring their knowledge of planning and restoration techniques and practice to GW and be capable of managing the range of logistics and planning associated with successful restoration projects.

You will need:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., ecology, environmental management) or equivalent experience
  • At least five years’ experience in ecological restoration, project management and community engagement
  • Ability to plan, implement and monitor programmes within budget.
