The Department of Conservation is seeking applicants for the position of Ranger, Community; Kaitiaki, Āo Hāpori based in Palmerston North. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a strong and hardworking team, and support conservation growth in the Manawatu District alongside our Treaty partners and community.
Core components of this role include:
- Coordinating local involvement in statutory processes, such as Statutory Land Management, RMA, and the administration of concessions and Wildlife Act permits;
- Overseeing community-led conservation projects on public conservation land;
- Providing support for landscape scale conservation initiatives in our communities;
- Managing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders;
- Supporting whānau, hapū and iwi in kaitiakitanga;
- Supporting the Manawatu Operations District to deliver high quality conservation outcomes.
The ideal applicant will:
- Have a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in either project management, environmental science, or community education and outreach;
- Be familiar with legislation relevant to conservation and how it applies to DOC’s work (e.g. Conservation Act, Marine Mammals Act, Wildlife Act, Reserves Act, Resource Management Act);
- Be adept at learning and using a wide range of systems and processes;
- Be analytical and innovative, able to identify issues and opportunities then develop solutions;
- Be organised and thorough, able to plan, deliver and assess complex projects;
- Be a team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Build positive working relationships across a broad range of public and private sector businesses and groups;
- Hold a current full New Zealand Driver License
Experience working with whānau, hapū and iwi and an understanding of te ao Māori me ngā tikanga will be an advantage.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
