The Community Team lobby to protect conservation values by providing statutory advice to decision makers on applications for activities such as permissions, concessions and applications under the Resource Management Act and the Crown Pastoral Land Act.
You will engage with iwi/hapu/whanau, and maintaining effective stakeholder relationships with businesses, trusts, councils, community groups to support them on the delivery of conservation outcomes.

He angitūtanga | About the role
This Community Ranger role has the focus on the statutory elements of community work.
You’ll be part of an energetic and hard-working team of seven, supporting and delivering statutory work and building/maintaining community relationships. You will be unpicking legislation and researching the conservation values of a piece of conservation land. Or, looking at a piece of land in ARCGIS, analysing an application, or working with colleagues across the region on larger scale applications. ; You’ll always be considering iwi views and often gathering iwi advice on applications.
In this role you will:
- Process permit applications for activities such as disturbing wildlife, filming, aircraft activity, grazing and easements.
- Provide high quality input on Resource Management and Crown Pastoral Land Act processes, including describing affected conservation values and recommending outcomes to avoid/minimise the effects on these values.
- Monitor commercial or private activity on public conservation land.
- Provide field support for statutory land management functions
- Provide administrative, liaison and advocacy support to projects that seek to achieve more conservation through greater involvement of iwi, business and the wider community.
- Liaise with team members through the Department to understand and incorporate their expertise and support the Operations Manager to fulfil their role as Decision Maker for these processes.

With your interest in conservation in our region and understanding of the Whakatipu-wai-Māori district, you will have the ability to make decisions and prioritise work. You will hold multiple pieces of work at one time, juggling competing statutory deadlines and grasping, understanding, and working within prescribed processes.
You will have a proven ability to think critically, removing the complexity without losing the context/content and to interpret and apply legislation, policy or management documents to a given situation. With your ability to write clearly and concisely using plain English you will be able to provide context, critical analysis and logical conclusion and recommendations for decision makers.
With your positive, enthusiastic personality you will enjoy engaging with the community and building relationships with volunteer groups, iwi/hapu/whanau and businesses to achieve good outcomes for conservation. You will be happy getting out of the office occasionally to engage with external stakeholders, participate in meetings and undertake site visits.

The salary range for this position is $53,776 to $68,714 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
