He angitūtanga | About the role

These are crucial operational roles forming part of a small, close-knit team who maintain historical pā sites, tracks, and amenity areas through a variety of landscapes from forests to picturesque coastal areas.

These positions will be focussed on:

  • Undertaking tasks for the heritage and visitor programmes
  • Undertaking repairs and maintenance of tracks and visitor facilities, in both front and back country locations
  • Carrying out planned work to high standard and on time
  • Contributing to the successful delivery of projects
  • Working alongside other DOC staff, contractors and volunteers, and partnering with iwi

These roles will involve semi-regular trips away overnight (3-7 days at a time) in order to efficiently complete the work programme. Some of these trips are planned in advance, while some will be at short notice. Before applying for this role, please carefully consider if your personal-life commitments would hinder your ability to be away from home overnight. When working away on overnight trips accommodation and food will be provided, and an allowance will be paid.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

We are looking for two enthusiastic, practical and talented team players who have a passion for protecting Coromandel’s heritage and visitor sites.

If you have all or most of the following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • Experience and/or qualifications operating small machinery (i.e., weed eaters, lawnmowers, chainsaws).
  • Carpentry/building experience.
  • Hands-on practical skills with attention to detail.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to cope with changing priorities at short notice.
  • Self-motivated and reliable person, who can operate well in a team environment.
  • Full New Zealand driver’s licence, comfortable driving a manual vehicle on narrow, gravel roads.

Desirable skills, experience and qualifications:

  • GrowSafe Certification
  • First Aid Certification
  • Tech savvy, with the ability to use hand-held GPS devices and mobile apps.
  • Tramping or backcountry experience/skills.
  • Four-wheel Drive Unit Standards
  • Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) Unit Standards

The Regional Operations Group is responsible for delivering conservation work on the ground through our Biodiversity, Heritage and Visitor, Community Engagement and Visitor Centre teams.

The Whitianga District team covers the northern Coromandel Peninsula – from the Tapu-Coroglen Road to the northern tip, including the significant ecological areas of Moehau and Papakai, as well as some of the eastern predator-free islands, and Te-Whanganui-O-Hei / Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve.

The salary range for this position is $58,816 to $66,578 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
