Otago based, Habitat Restorations Aotearoa Ltd. is a small ecological restoration contractor doing big things – reviving biodiversity, improving water quality, restoring ecological function and healthy habitats. We seek restoration rangers to bolster the team conducting native plantings and weed and pest control projects at various projects around Otago, Southland and the Waitaki.

Habitat Restorations Aotearoa are involved in ongoing native revegetation projects for Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau Sinclair Wetlands, the Department of Conservation, Fish and Game, Pomahaka Water Care Group and Fonterra. The primary work site is Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau Sinclair Wetlands, 50km south of Dunedin. Our rangers will need to be available for all projects, some of which will be out of town and involve overnight stays or up to 5 days at a a time (Mon-Fri). Travel, accommodation and a food allowance will be covered for projects involving overnight travel.
The ‘Restoration Ranger’ role will cover a range of outdoor, practical conservation tasks including:
- Weed control using a combination of hand, mechanical and chemical based techniques ie scrub bar, knapsack and gun spraying (growsafe certificate required)
- Native planting, and installation of plant guards.
- Predator trapping.
- Propagation, planting and maintenance of native plant species.
- Upkeep and maintenance of grounds, tracks and infrastructure.
- Outdoors work is at the mercy of the elements, physical and repetitive in nature, meaningful and rewarding.
A suitable applicant will require:
- A high level of self-drive, physical and mental fitness and the willingness to learn and develop personally.
- Personal and communication skills, team player attributes, a sense of humour, a professional manner and take pride in their work.
- A passion for the outdoors, ecological restoration, wetlands, conservation, community and be driven by results and success.
- Cultural knowledge, understanding and awareness.
- The capabilities to place safety at the forefront of all operations and help develop and adhere to risk management procedures.
- The ability to deliver a high standard of work in challenging/remote locations.
- Experience in the outdoors working in hot, cold, wet and windy conditions.
- Excellent native plant and invasive weed identification skills.
- Predator trapping, mapping and reporting experience and skills.
- Practical skills, invasive weed control experience and familiarity with a wide range of methods and machinery would be advantageous.
- A current ‘basic’ or ‘standard’ growsafe certificate’ will be required.
- Eligibility to work in New Zealand for the full term of employment.
