Want a job where Invercargill gardens are your office? Get your hands dirty and dig into a role with Parks Operations!

Invercargill’s reputation for being family-friendly is well deserved, with affordable housing, great schools and amazing facilities. With Central Otago, Fiordland and the Catlins on our doorstep, we are uniquely situated to enable easy exploration of the region’s world-famous ski fields, lakes and wineries. As New Zealand’s southernmost city we proudly encourage a good work-life balance and with direct flights, Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington are within easy reach. All good reasons why working for Invercargill City Council is a great career and lifestyle choice.

We are currently seeking three Gardeners and a Senior Gardener to join our busy Parks Operations team on a permanent full-time basis.

With your genuine interest in horticulture and a passion for working outdoors, you’ll enjoy the variation these positions provide. You will have a flexible, can-do attitude and the ability to turn your hand to a variety of horticultural activities including planting and caring for trees, shrubs and bedding plants, weed control, pest control, path and track maintenance as well as general gardening and maintenance work.

You will be safety and quality-focused, as the operation and maintenance of a range of small to heavy machinery, tools and equipment form part of these positions. Rural fire fighting is an area that our Parks Operations employees may be involved in, therefore experience or an interest in this will be highly regarded.

A current NZ driver’s licence is essential for these positions as is demonstrated experience within the Horticultural industry. Previous experience in traffic management including a Traffic Controller or Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS) certificate would be an advantage but is not essential.

Our ideal candidate for the Senior Gardener position will also hold a tertiary qualification in Horticulture, an Approved Handler and/or Growsafe certificate and Level 1 Basic Traffic Controller certificate. Previous experience in staff supervision will be looked at favourably.

Excellent teamwork, good communication skills and a high level of personal motivation to get the job done are essential for this position.

You will be joining a tight-knit group who pride themselves on their quality of work and their contribution to our city.

At Invercargill City Council we pride ourselves on our values – positivity, respect, responsibility and above and beyond. Finding the right fit for our team is really important to us and we work hard to provide an environment reflective of these values.

The Invercargill City Council is committed to the wellbeing and protection of children, the elderly and vulnerable adults. As a component of this role involves interaction with one or more of the above groups, as part of the assessment of candidates, we will require Police Vetting as per the Children’s Act 2014 and a Pre-employment Alcohol and Drug Screening test to ensure we are providing a safe environment for our customers and members of the public.
